A single breath exhales the stoic lament of a wandering spirit. -- Stephen Holden - THE NEW YORK TIMES From the Artist The summer I was thirteen and Fiona was eleven, my father began bringing us along to the nearby Venice home of his friend, the song writer Marshall Barer -- just a short walk from our house. Marshall called these evenings his "Sunday Soirees", and Fiona and I had not yet experienced an eyeful or an earful quite like it. The Soirees were attended mostly by actors and singers and song writers all filling the evening with an endless stream of music around Marshall's white grand piano. This recording is filled with songs which came to me as a result of those wonderful soirees. About the Artist Maude Maggart is a third-generation performer whose lineage began when her fifteen year-old grandmother became the youngest member of the corps de ballet of George White's Scandals of 1926. Her grandfather is a former lead vocalist and reedman with the Harry James Orchestra, her parents met in the original cast of Applause, and her sister is the singer and songwriter Fiona Apple. Maude Maggart began her singing career by way of Marshall Barer. A longtime friend of her father, the actor Brandon Maggart, Marshall and his music were introduced to Maude during her adolescent summers in Venice, California. Clasping little-girl hands, Maude and her younger sister sat close together as they absorbed all at Marshall's legendary musical "Sunday Soirees". Michael Feinstein and Andrea Marcovicci supplied, first, the voices of that initial introduction to musical/lyrical excellence, and later; the wings under whose care Maude would become an ardent devotee and performer of American popular songs.
