Description
Product description This is the debut album from The Hollisters on Hightone Records. The band consists of four traditional-minded musicians who bring togeather musical backgrounds from country honky-tonk to rock and blues in a true Texas style. Mike Barfields gritty, Johnny Cash influenced vocals and Eric Danheim's electric guitar make for a good varied album and with guests such as the legendary Earl Poole Ball on piano, these 13 tracks are certainly a must. Honky-tonk shuffles, Swamp pop, a murder ballard and Texas roots rock its all here on this superb album. Amazon.com This Houston-based combo incorporates elements of honky-tonk traditionalism, rockabilly revivalism, and blues-rock revisionism. But what the Hollisters--named after Mayberry's town bootlegger--are really about is some revved-up hillbilly boogie. Imagine the young Johnny Cash sitting in with the original Fabulous Thunderbirds and you'll be in the right ballpark. Sweet Inspiration, the band's second album, covers a surprising amount of ground, from the deep Houston roots of Eddie Noack's "Walk 'Em Off" to the Cajun-flavored "Fishin' Man," the two-steppin' "Drinking for Two," the Chuck Berry-styled "Love Rustler," and the rousing title track. Vocalist Mike Barfield is responsible for the Cash comparisons, though he goes places stylistically the Man in Black never imagined. Guitarist Eric Danheim is a master of taste and tone, while the diesel-powered rhythm section of bassist Denny "Cletus" Blakely and Kevin "Snit" Fitzpatrick puts so many sloppy y'alternative outfits to shame. (Danheim left the band following the recording and has been replaced by Chris Miller, formerly with Wayne Hancock and Marcia Ball.) --Rick Mitchell

Can the Hollisters save country music? This disc says "yes." Where their first effort was a strong dose of country traditionalism, this second outing ranges further afield while still keeping its feet firmly planted in the rural tradition that makes the Hollisters so refreshing. Mike Barfield's voice reminds you of a young Johnny Cash and on tracks like "Sugar Land" his tone is as black as Cash's outfits. At the same time, the band provides lighter material about the truly important things in life ("Fishin' Man"), the joys of freedom ("Tonkin'"), and the almost mandatory drinking, crying-in-your-beer song ("Drinking for Two"). Country music doesn't get much better than this. The Hollisters hearken back to tradition but are growing into a true original.
