Toot Sweet by Lee Konitz and Michel Petrucciani is one of those little gems you happen upon as you explore the wonderful world of jazz.Konitz has always loved doing duets and has some remarkable duet recordings to his credit, to which this one can be added. Recorded at Centre Musical Bösendorfer in Paris on 25 May 1982, with Konitz on alto and Petrucciani on a Bösendorfer Imperial in an outstanding acoustical environment, the album features 6 tracks; 4 are short, ranging from 2 minutes to just under 5 minutes. The other two, 'Round About Midnight and Lover Man, are both over 15 minutes long.Michel, nineteen years old at the time and on his third recording session, plays beautifully, although with some degree of deference to the living legend he is paired with. Lee is, well, Lee, and pokes, probes and explores the melodies while never straying too far from them. Michel's playing seems to bring out the more lyrical side of Konitz. This clearly was a match meant to be with both players very in touch with each other and supportive of the other.Petrucciani and Konitz each take one solo song each, To Erlinda and Ode, respectively. The music is a delight and the sonic quality is very, very good. All in all, the album is a delight, and one I recommend without the slightest reservation.
